From WeWork to the lies of Facebook, the sales and marketing world is changing. The scary part is we keep trying to find a single thread to say, "this is how you do it," because in reality you could put a check in every single box and follow that single thread and get nowhere. You could do something out of the ordinary and hit a home run...it just depends. Doug mentions that a business's growth is 50% luck (due to factors outside of our control) and 50% revision of the mean which is the one metric analysts never seem to talk about. We can't get from one point to another in a straight line, and as Mike points out, it's a rollercoaster ride. We keep getting promised this path of success from people telling us how to get there that we forget 1. there's no straight line and 2. every line is a curve.

Nowadays everyone is trying to treat data like it's the solution rather than a guide. If you're looking at metrics to give you answers, you're doing it wrong. Just about all data is rear-viewed (and very biased). Everything we gather is based on historical performance an it's a long ways away from being future based. We need a reset. We need to start looking at the bigger picture, otherwise we're going to be in a different place, blindly following metrics like a lot of lost puppies. We need to stop being data blind.
